Transport ministers' conference: price for Germany ticket to remain at 49 euros per year in 2024

Press release of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour
Meyer: Decision is a sign of politicians' reliability towards citizens

Following a digital meeting of the Special Conference of Transport Ministers on 22 January 2024, the federal states unanimously decided that the price of 49 euros per month for the Deutschlandticket should remain the same in 2024. The committee determined that, according to current forecasts, the funds made available by the federal and state governments will be sufficient even without an increase in the ticket price in 2024. The Conference of Transport Ministers also called on the federal government to swiftly implement the agreement reached in November 2023 to carry over funds made available in 2023 but not used into 2024 and to extend this to the entire period from 2023 to 2025.

Statement by Reinhard Meyer, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour:

"The federal states have succeeded in working together to ensure that the price of the Deutschland-Ticket remains the same in 2024, at 49 euros per month. I think this is an important signal to encourage more people to switch to local public transport. At the same time, it is a sign of reliability on the part of politicians towards citizens."

If it becomes clear in the course of the year, on the basis of more recent figures, what specific deficit is to be expected in the introductory phase, the Conference of Transport Ministers will deal with this in a timely manner.

General information:

The Deutschlandticket was launched on 1 May 2023. To compensate for uncovered expenditure in local public transport, the federal and state governments will provide 3 billion euros annually during the introductory phase from 2023 to 2025 in accordance with the principle of half of the costs. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also financing the difference for the purchase of the Deutschlandticket for 29 euros for trainees and is the first state in Germany to do so for senior citizens.

The loss of revenue incurred by the transport companies is financed equally by the federal government and the federal states. Until 30 April 2024, the tariff for the Deutschlandticket has been ordered by the public transport authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - as agreed nationwide.
