First modernised RE1 presented

More comfortable and now with WLAN: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Deutsche Bahn modernise RE1 trains between Rostock, Schwerin and Hamburg

Schwerin, 16 May 2022 Train passengers between Rostock, Schwerin and Hamburg can look forward to more comfort and WLAN: Deutsche Bahn (DB) is modernising the carriages of the RE1 line between Rostock, Schwerin and Hamburg on behalf of Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH (VMV). Today, the first completely finished train was presented in Schwerin. In total, one third of the 38 coaches have already undergone the freshening-up, all others will follow by autumn. The RE1 - also known as the Hanse-Express - connects Rostock with Schwerin and Hamburg at two-hour intervals. During the peak hours from Monday to Friday, the RE1 runs once an hour between Schwerin and Hamburg.

In the award procedure for the state's "Baltic Coast West" transport contract, DB Regio AG was awarded the contract for five years until December 2026 at the end of last year. "The RE1 is an important link for our state with the Hamburg metropolitan region. It is the route with the highest passenger volume, which is equally important for commuters and for guests discovering our holiday region. It is therefore all the more important that the trains become significantly more attractive. The modernised double-decker coaches of the 'Hanse-Express' are not only a visual gain for all guests - more comfort and also more services such as free W-LAN make travelling by train even more pleasant. Sustainable investments in equipment are good reasons for potential customers to provide more incentives to switch to climate-friendly travel," made Ines Jesse, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour, clear.

Berthold Witting, Managing Director of Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (VMV), emphasises: "I am delighted about all these new features on this route in particular - one of the busiest lines in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern anywhere. Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is already working on a new follow-up contract for the SPNV services between Rostock-Schwerin-Hamburg. In this transport contract (from 2027), the state has planned for new vehicles."

Carsten Moll, head of DB Regio Nordost, adds: "Well connected: with the Hanse-Express, that's not only the regions between Hamburg, Schwerin and Rostock, but now also passengers digitally with WLAN and the train portal. We are pleased that we were able to convince the federal states with our offer and that the RE1 line will be even more attractive for commuters and excursionists once the 'freshening-up' is complete."

The modernisation of the 38 double-decker coaches was started in January 2022. For this purpose, individual wagons will be removed from regular operation and then brought directly back into service in a modernised form. In this way, one coach will be replaced by a modernised one every week or so. By autumn of this year, all the carriages will be ready. New features for passengers, apart from the refurbishment of the interiors, include WLAN. The integrated info portal offers regional news, podcasts and even language courses for an entertaining and enjoyable journey. The toilet facilities are also being renovated for a more pleasant journey. The combined design of the Baltic Sea beach and bathroom look evokes holiday anticipation.
