Press release of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour
Meyer: "The general refurbishment between Hamburg and Berlin will determine the next timetable year"
Schwerin, 09 December 2024. The new 2025 annual timetable for local rail passenger transport (SPNV) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern starts on Sunday, 15 December 2024. Reinhard Meyer, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour, explains: "The new timetable is also in line with our Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mobility offensive. The massive expansion of services from this year, with over 1.2 million additional timetable kilometres, will continue unchanged in the new timetable year."
However, the many construction sites would test the patience of rail travellers and "unfortunately slow down the rail offensive quite a bit". The main routes between Schwerin and Berlin and Hamburg will be closed for nine months between August 2025 and April 2026. Other routes, e.g. Ludwigslust - Parchim, will also be affected. Reinhard Meyer: "This will be a particularly stressful year for all railway customers in MV, but the work is absolutely necessary. Deutsche Bahn has a duty to do everything it can to make the impact as bearable as possible."
Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH, emphasises the following for the new timetable year: "A great deal of nationwide commitment is needed from the public transport authorities to be able to tackle issues such as the Deutschlandtakt, financing and cost recovery in local rail passenger transport (SPNV), digital rail and the general refurbishment of the high-performance corridors in Germany."
News on the routes in the country
When the new Warnow II transport contract comes into force, the structure of the service on the Rostock S-Bahn will be fundamentally reorganised for the first time since 2012. An improved service on Mondays to Saturdays during the day (every 10 minutes instead of every 15 minutes) is offset by a reduced service in the afternoon rush hour (every 10 minutes instead of every 7.5 minutes) and on Sundays (every 20 minutes instead of every 15 minutes).
The modernisation of the Rostock S-Bahn's vehicle fleet, which began in 2023, is progressing according to plan. By the timetable change, 16 of the S-Bahn's 22 multiple units will have been modernised. Among other things, the modernised trains offer free Wi-Fi, power sockets and additional bicycle stands.
There is also good news on Usedom: from the timetable change on 15 December 2024, there will no longer be any restrictions on train services on the RB23 Züssow - Swinemünde line. In the morning and evening hours, passengers will no longer have to change from train to bus and vice versa in Ueckeritz. Usedomer Bäderbahn GmbH, the operator of the track systems and signal boxes, has assured that the transport services ordered by the state can be provided without restriction. Sufficient staff are once again available to man the signal boxes.
With the timetable change, ODEG will be taking over the RB17 Ludwigslust - Wismar and RB18 Schwerin - Bad Kleinen lines from DB Regio AG as planned, as well as most of the RE1 services between Schwerin and Rostock.
State continues southern railway seasonal services and the feeder service to the ferries in the port of Mukran
In the 2025 season, the state will again offer additional journeys on the southern railway and to the Sassnitz ferry port.
The seasonal service on the Mecklenburg Southern Railway between Waren/Müritz or Parchim and Plau am See (RB15/RB19) will continue every two hours at Easter (18 April - 21 April) and from May (29 May) to September (14 September) on Fridays as well as at weekends and on public holidays. In combination with the buses on route 77, there will once again be an hourly service between Parchim, Plau and Malchow. As in the previous year, trains between Schwerin and Parchim will be increased from every two hours to every hour at weekends during the season. As already this year, the RB15 Waren - Inselstadt Malchow line will be extended from Malchow to Alt Schwerin on Mondays to Fridays during the summer holidays.
On the route from Bergen auf Rügen to Sassnitz, to the ferry port of Mukran Port, travellers will once again be able to reach the "Bornholmslinjen" ships to Bornholm directly by train between May and October in the 2025 summer season. Following the withdrawal of the FRS shipping company from the ferry service between Mukran and Trelleborg on 30 September 2024, the RE27 feeder line service will be restructured. The specific organisation of the service under the changed conditions is currently being planned with the local partners - the shipping company and the seaport of Mukran.
Establishment of further regional bus routes and a nationwide on-call bus system
To improve connections to rural areas, the regional bus routes launched by the state together with the municipal transport companies and the districts responsible for bus transport in 2024, as well as the state-wide on-demand bus system, will be continued and further expanded in 2025.
The following Regiobus routes are in operation nationwide in 2025:
- Line 012: Neubrandenburg - Waren/Müritz - Röbel,
- Line 029: Sassnitz - Binz - Göhren - Klein Zicker,
- Line 170: Schwerin - Cambs - Bruel - Sternberg,
- Line 240: Wismar - Boltenhagen - Klütz - Grevesmühlen,
- Line 245: Wismar - Neukloster - Warin - Blankenberg,
- Line 270: Sternberg - Witzin - Güstrow,
- Line 320: Sanitz - Marlow - Tribsees (extension to Greifswald planned from 1 June 2025),
- Line 330: Wismar - Gägelow - Grevesmühlen.
The addition of further regional bus routes in the course of 2025 is in preparation.
Comprehensive on-call bus systems in the sense of "Rufbus MV" have been fully implemented in the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Northwest Mecklenburg, Rostock and the Mecklenburg Lake District. In the districts of Vorpommern-Rügen and Vorpommern-Greifswald, full coverage will be further advanced in 2025.
Better track infrastructure at Hagenow Land railway station
At Hagenow Land railway station, a second track at the junction to Schwerin from the Hamburg - Berlin main line was put into operation in November after eight months of construction. A single-track bottleneck area between two points was resolved with a new track section. Almost 300 metres of new track and a total of nine new points were installed in the station.
New stop at Schwerin Industrial Park
DB InfraGO AG has largely completed the new "Schwerin Industriepark" stop on behalf of the state after a two-month construction phase. The station will be ready for use when the timetable changes on 15 December 2024 and is expected to be fully completed in January 2025 with barrier-free access to the level crossing, platform furniture, weather protection and appropriate lighting. In future, all trains on the RB13 Rehna - Schwerin - Parchim line will stop at the new station. The total cost of the new station is 1.9 million euros, with the state covering 1.5 million euros of the costs.
Information on the planned general refurbishment of the Berlin-Hamburg line:
Between 1 August 2025 and 30 April 2026, Deutsche Bahn (DB) will be carrying out a general refurbishment. During this time, the entire railway line between Berlin-Spandau and Hamburg Hbf and neighbouring lines will be fully closed to train traffic. In addition to the main Berlin - Hamburg line, the following lines in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are affected by full closures:
- from Hagenow Land to Hagenow Stadt,
- from Hagenow Land to Schwerin Süd,
- from Ludwigslust to Parchim and
- from Ludwigslust to Schwerin Süd.
Further full closures by DB InfraGO AG on railway lines in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2025:
The following lines will be affected by extensive construction work with full closures and rail replacement services (SEV) in the coming months - in some cases on an ongoing basis:
- RE4 Lübeck - Ueckermünde/Stettin probably until 28.02.25 in the section Reuterstadt Stavenhagen - Oertzenhof,
- RE5 Stralsund - Neustrelitz - Berlin and RE51 Stralsund - Neustrelitz probably until 28.02.25 in the Burg Stargard - Demmin section,
- RE5 Rostock - Neustrelitz - Berlin and RE50 Rostock - Neustrelitz between 15.12.24 and 07.03.25 in the Güstrow - Neustrelitz section.
The construction work of DB Infra-GO AG in the Neubrandenburg area, which has already been extended several times, will continue until the end of February 2025 according to current knowledge. In the Neubrandenburg area, it will therefore still be necessary to change to the SEV in all directions.
In addition, DB InfraGO AG is completely closing the Neustrelitz - Güstrow section of the line from the timetable change, partly because a federal road bridge in Waren/Müritz has to be renewed. This will make travelling between Rostock and Berlin more difficult. Some long-distance trains between Rostock and Berlin will be diverted via Schwerin. DB InfraGO AG is currently examining whether individual RE5 trains can also be diverted via Schwerin.
Full road closures are also planned on the following sections of the route:
- Sassnitz - Mukran from 11.07.25 to 10.12.25,
- Rostock Hbf - Schwaan from 15.03.25 to 11.04.25,
- Grevesmühlen - Bad Kleinen from 07.03.25 to 31.07.25,
- Bad Kleinen - Lübstorf from 22.04.25 to 21.06.25,
- Schwerin-Görries - Plate from 21.03.25 to 06.04.25.
