State mobility campaign: RE50 between Rostock and Neustrelitz successfully launched - more trains and better connections

From today, passengers can benefit from the new RE50 regional express line between Rostock, Güstrow, Waren and Neustrelitz. MV Transport Minister Reinhard Meyer is reacting to the increased demand as a result of the Deutschlandticket.

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which has ordered this new connection from DB Regio Nordost, is thus strengthening the attractiveness of public transport for both commuters and leisure travellers as part of the MV mobility campaign. The RE50 is part of the Warnow transport contract and its follow-up contract from December 2024. Five-car TALENT 2 vehicles, which are also used on the Rostock S-Bahn, will be deployed. These vehicles will be successively refurbished for the start of the new transport contract and will be used again immediately afterwards so that passengers can enjoy a fresh look, modern passenger information displays, power sockets, Wi-Fi and entertaining content in the train portal in more and more vehicles in future. The first three modernised vehicles have been in regular service on the S-Bahn since mid-March and are now also in service on the new RE50.

Transport Minister Reinhard Meyer emphasised: "Things are getting underway just in time for the May holidays. The local transport service on the Rostock-Güstrow-Neustrelitz route is being extended. There is now an hourly service between Rostock and Neustrelitz. The state has planned and ordered this important expansion of services as part of its mobility offensive. The strong increase in demand associated with the Deutschland-Ticket requires an increase in the capacity of regional rail transport services in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern."

Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, said: "We are fulfilling the long-awaited wish of the public to finally close a noticeable gap in services on one of our most important routes. With the new RE50 line, we are connecting the tourist regions of the Baltic Sea coast with the Mecklenburg Lake District and offering connections to the Berlin metropolitan region. All better and more frequently than before."

Carsten Moll, Head of DB Regio Nordost, added: "My thanks go to the state and VMV. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern needs a strong railway, we are pursuing the same goal together. After all, more rail services are good for people, regional development and climate protection. With the new RE50 and our modernised, air-conditioned and barrier-free trains, we are taking another big step forward on this common path."

Better connections to Berlin and Rostock

With the new RE50 line, travellers now have a two-hourly connection in Neustrelitz to the RE5 from Stralsund in the direction of Berlin. Together with the RE5 trains from Rostock, which run every two hours, travellers now have the opportunity to travel from the Hanseatic city to the capital every hour during the day. The RE50 line stops at all the usual RE5 stations along the route, meaning that other towns - including Güstrow and Waren (Müritz) - will benefit from the addition to the timetable in the direction of the capital. Of course, this increased frequency also benefits travellers from Berlin and all towns along the route towards Rostock.
