MV mobility campaign: New regional bus route between Sternberg and Güstrow

Press release of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour
Jesse: Improve existing bus routes in the area and create new continuous routes

On Monday, the new regional bus line 270 on the Sternberg - Güstrow route was officially launched by the transport company rebus. State Secretary for Transport Ines Jesse, District Administrator Sebastian Constien from the district of Rostock, the Managing Director of VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Daniel Bischof and the authorised signatory of Rebus Regionalbus Rostock GmbH Marc Weinhauer took part in the official inauguration of the cross-district regional bus route. State Secretary Ines Jesse also handed over a grant notification for the promotion of regional bus services in local public transport totalling over 300,000 euros. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is supporting the project from regionalisation funds via the VMV-Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

"We want to improve the range of cross-district bus routes in the area and create new continuous routes. This is a key objective of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mobility campaign. We are therefore supporting the districts with grants of 2.05 euros per service kilometre for regional bus services in order to establish modern service standards. In close co-operation between the regional buses and an efficient local rail passenger transport system, which is being further expanded, we are creating a dense network for the whole of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The aim is to increase the quality of life and participation of our citizens through an attractive range of public mobility services, even beyond the well-developed railway lines, and to initiate the transport transition in the state through a sustainable switch to climate-friendly public transport systems, especially in rural areas," said Ines Jesse, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour.

Regiobus routes will run at regular hourly or two-hourly intervals, regardless of school and holiday times. In addition, the regional bus routes are linked with rail services to create a dense network for the whole of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

As part of the MV mobility offensive launched in April 2023, the state and the districts have agreed to promote the creation of fast, synchronised regional bus services across all districts. Existing conventional scheduled services will be upgraded as high-quality regular-interval services in the area in accordance with uniform service and quality standards and new bus connections will be created that also cross district boundaries by means of sensible route combinations. The state supports the administrative districts as the responsible public transport authorities by providing grants for interlinked bus services in local public transport with the aim of optimising and expanding the standard of services.

The Regiobuses MV on route 270 run every two hours daily. Monday to Friday between 5 am and 10 pm and for the first time at weekends between 6 am and 8 pm. There is also a connection to the Regiobus line 170 to and from Schwerin in Sternberg.

District Administrator Sebastian Constien said: "With the new Regiobus line, the public transport service in the district of Rostock is once again becoming a little more attractive. Now it is up to the residents to make use of this service and show us that we have met their needs. Because only if the number of users increases can we justify the urgently needed investments in public transport to our political bodies."

Daniel Bischof, Managing Director of VMV- Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH, said: "The new line 270 provides convenient connections at Güstrow station to city and regional transport with Rebus buses, as well as to the S-Bahn to Rostock and trains to Bützow and Berlin, for example. In Sternberg, passengers also have a convenient connection between the Regiobus lines 170 and 270."

Marc Weinhauer, authorised signatory of Rebus Regionalbus Rostock GmbH: "Thanks to the support of the district and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we can now develop the service on route 270 into a regional bus route and are delighted for the passengers and the region that we were able to create the necessary capacity within a few weeks and thus make the rural area much more attractive. This shows that if all those responsible pull together, the transport turnaround is not a vision of the future, but is already a reality today."

Further Regiobus routes in the districts of Vorpommern-Greifswald, Vorpommern-Rügen and the Mecklenburg Lake District are planned for the second quarter of 2024:

  • Sanitz - Marlow - Triebsees - Grimmen - Greifswald (VVR)
  • Sassnitz - Binz - Göhren - Klein Zicker (VVR)
  • the existing line 12 Neubrandenburg - Waren will be extended to Röbel (MVVG)
